Five productions. Four theaters. Three characters, each with a different instrument. Two directors. One singular play that set me on this path with purpose.

"American Mariachi" was the gift that kept on giving. It re-introduced me to the world of mariachi. I got to spend five seasons studying guitar, guitarrón, and trumpet under the legendary Cynthia Reifler-Flores. It was my first out of state contract, and challenged me to reprise a role, and later stretched myself even further by embodying two vastly different characters, playing vastly different instruments.

Most profoundly, it was the first time I played a character who shared my own ethnicity—Mexican-American. That experience reshaped my sense of belonging in this industry and expanded my vision of what’s possible. American Mariachi didn’t just give me a role; it gave me a deeper connection to my heritage, my artistry, and my future in theater.

The lesson learned: The journey is the destination

Every single person who has ever come through this show, really learned to play their mariachi instrument,

but they didn’t just learn the notes—they learned the heart of the music.

I’m proud to be one of them
